The ceremony for the 2025 International Literacy Day was held at the meeting hall of Office No. (13) of the Ministry of Education in Nay Pyi Taw on September 8.

The event was attended by Union Ministers, the Chairman of the Nay Pyi Taw Council, Deputy Ministers, senior education professionals, departmental officials, teachers, students, invited guests, and other responsible personnel. The ceremony began with a performance of the song “Education for All" by students from No. (11) Basic Education High School in Zabuthiri Township, Nay Pyi Taw. Following the performance, Patron of the Steering Committee for Organizing the International Literacy Day ceremony and Union Minister for Education Dr Chaw Chaw Sein, delivered the opening speech.

She highlighted that, just as countries around the world observe International Literacy Day, Myanmar has also been commemorating it annually. Reflecting on the history of literacy efforts in the country, she noted. During the eras of ancient Myanmar kings, monastic education systems played a key role in promoting literacy.

After regaining independence, national literacy campaigns were carried out through public education systems. Following the assumption of power by the Revolutionary Council in 1962, the government implemented the “Three Rs” method reading, writing, and arithmetic). In 1964, a mass literacy movement was launched, and in 1971, Myanmar was awarded the Mohammad Reza Pahlavi Prize by UNESCO.

In 1983, the country received the Noma Literacy Prize recognizing the success of Myanmar’s literacy campaigns on the global stage. After the speech, a video clip was shown highlighting ongoing literacy efforts and non-formal education programs being carried out across the country.

This was followed by a performance of the song "Helping Hands for Literacy" by students from No. (6) Basic Education High School. Later in the ceremony, the Union Minister presented cash of honor to the student performers. Then, the attendees visited the literacy-themed exhibition booths set up in honor of International Literacy Day 2025.
