Traditional Handicrafts: Small-Scale Industrial Products And Handicraft Expo

Hailing the Diamond Jubilee Union Day, the small-scale industrial products and handicraft Fair and Expo was held in Yangon in conjunction with opening of Myanma Handicraft Centre.

The event aimed to keep Myanmar cultural traditions alive, support traditional handicrafts businesses, provide one-stop service for the traditional arts and crafts across the country, explore new markets for export growth and promote small-scale industries.

Khin San Shwe, Sales Manager, Myanma Arts & Crafts Association said “Our center sells a wide range of Myanmar’s handicrafts including lacquerware, silver and bronze products, carving made of wood, timber, bamboo and gems, bam-boo and rattan products, sea shell and oyster shell crafts and other local crafts. We sell the traditional handicrafts to local customers at reasonable price.”

The local products from regions and states were exhibited at the expo and it helps enhance the livelihoods of those engaged in traditional arts and crafts making businesses.

AungMaung, Director, Kachin State Small-Scale Industries Department said “We have small and medium enterprise, weaving industry and we also conduct short-term vocational trainings. We also produce household and personal goods and also shared technique to produce value-added products. We show amber and jade products produced from Kachin State and value-added handicraft products at our booth.”

MyoMyintNaing, Head of Department, Taninthayi Region Small-scale Industries Dept. said “Taninthayi region produces handicraft products and food stuffs. The regional products such as edible bird’s nest, Kanzaw oil, dried fish and prawn, fishery products, textile and traditional medicines are displayed here.”

77 booths were displayed at the 2-day expo andthe regional products across Myanmar were showcased for the people at one place.
