School Opening Day: Basic Education Schools Across The Country Reopened

After the enrollment period of basic education classes for the 2022-2023 academic year ended on June 1st, the schools in Myanmar are opening now starting from June 2nd.

At No. (2) Basic Education High School, Sanchaung Township in Yangon, the students and parents are crowding at the school since 6:30 AM on the opening day although the school time is from 7:30 AM to 2:00 PM. Some students come to the school with their parents while others come by school buses.

Over 1,100 students have made their enrollments for this academic year at the school.

Amar Sein, Grade-9 Class Teacher, BEHS (2) Sanchaung, Yangon said “Within the school enrollment week, a total of 1,128 students; 133 boys and 995 girls, had enrolled for the 2022-2023 academic year. Boys are only accepted in primary classes which are from KG to Grade 5. Only girls are accepted in other classes. Currently, there are 35 teachers at our school.”

The school also made arrangements for COVID-19 prevention measures, and provided necessities for the students.

Moreover, the garbage bins at the school are distinguished into 3 categories; masks, dry waste and wet waste. The school’s canteen also received an exemplary award by the government.

Amar Sein, Grade-9 Class Teacher, BEHS (2) Sanchaung, Yangon said “For COVID-19 preventive measures, hand-wash basins and liquid hand soaps are provided at every class. The students’ body temperature is checked at the school entrance, and they are directed to wear masks inside the school campus.”

It is known that KG to Grade 11 classes will be taught with new syllabus for this academic year with the exception of Grade 9. The government also provides free textbooks and exercise books to the students.

Amar Sein, Grade-9 Class Teacher, BEHS (2) Sanchaung, Yangon said “Grade 9 will be taught with old syllabus. Other classes from KG to Grade 11 will be taught with new syllabus. The new syllabus includes additional subjects such as music, art, moral and civics, life skills, and physical education on top of the usual main subjects.”

There are over 3,200 schools in Yangon Region including 2,759 Basic Education Schools, 229 monastic education schools, and 219 registered private schools.
