Tatmadaw has regained full control of the Kawkareik–Thingannyinaung–Myawaddy section of the Asian Highway, a vital trade route connecting Myanmar and Thailand, after months of clashes with the KNU and KNLA. The KNU and allied groups had temporarily seized control of parts of the highway and towns along the border, attempting to block cross-border trade and establish a self-declared independent territory.

Their aim reportedly included taking control of key towns such as Myawaddy, Kawkareik, and Hpa-an. From April 2024 to August 2025, the Tatmadaw launched a series of counter-offensives to reclaim territory, including a major operation starting August 28, 2025, with multiple battalions advancing from both Myawaddy and Kawkareik. After 10 days of intense fighting, the Tatmadaw successfully retook Thingannyinaung on September 6, securing the entire highway.

It is reported that throughout the year-long operation, there were 382 battles, with 56 insurgents killed and various weapons and explosives seized. Tatmadaw troops also suffered casualties, sacrificing for the country. It is reported that KNU insurgents destroyed roads, bridges, and burnt vehicles during their temporary occupation.

Now that the highway is reopened, efforts are underway to ensure the safe resumption of trade and civilian travel. Local residents welcomed the reopening, hoping for a return to normal life.
