Pyu Ancient City: Beikthanoe Ancient City And Museum In Magway Region

The enthusiasts who want to explore the history and heritage of the ancient buildings, the old piece of jewellery, the ancient moat and the fort, can visit the ancient city called Beikthano, Beikthano heritage tourism site enchants enthusiastic visitors in Magway Region inscribed on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List, and the Beikthano Museum situated at 12 miles away from Taungdwingyi city in Magway Region.

U Khin Zaw (Deputy Director), World Heritage Division, Beikthano Unit said “In Beikthano old city, we have excavated a total of 66 brick mounds scientifically. A total of 25 ancient mounds were excavated for research from 1959 to 1962. Depending on Kokkokhwa Village, the excavated mounds of the city were named KKG that is from KKG-1 to KKG-25. A total of 41 further mounds were unearthed from 1995 to 2015. Those mounds are named as BTO depending on Beikthanoe. We have prepared presentation boards, vinyls and maps for the visitors.”

The Beikthano Museum will also feature the prehistorical artefacts of the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. The earthen urns, Pyu bricks, iron tools, Pyu Era coins, stone beats, bronze cups, statues and bells, Pyu utensils discovered in the old city.

The moat, fort and palace models, ancient city’s maps, evacuation maps and zone mappings are displayed at the museum. The museum is open between 9:30 am and 4:30 pm every day, except Monday and the gazetted holidays. The local visitors can explore the architectural treasure of the ancient city free of charge.

It was recognized as one of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed three Pyu ancient city-states on 22 June 2014.
