Interfaith Dialogue: SAC Chairman meets leaders for different religions

A meeting with representatives from interfaith groups was held at Zabuthiri hall in Nay Pyi Taw Council area on Friday with an address by Chairman of the State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.
In his opening speech, the Prime Minister said among the 56 million population in Myanmar, about 90% are traditional Buddhism with some 6 million Christians, over 2 million Islams, over 0.5 million Hindus and some other religions.
He emphasized that in the Chapter-8 of the 2008 Constitution “Citizens, Fundamental Rights and the Duties of the Citizens”, Sections 361 to 364 mentioned the stipulations related to religions, ensuring guarantee for freedom of religious rights in line with the law. He reiterated that religion can bring peace, stability and prosperity, if people practice their religions effectively and honestly, it could contribute for regional peace and stability, as prescribed in the basis fundamental facts of all religions.
Although the majority of the populations in Myanmar practices Buddhism, the government believes that peace and stability will be achieved in the nation by recognizing those who follow other religions with suitable action.
He outlined that Nay Pyi Taw Council area is a place where all religions can live together peacefully. Though there are less population of Christians, Islams and Hindus in Nay Pyi Taw, efforts are being made to become Nay Pyi Taw as a place representing all religions.
It also aims to promote prosperity of the country from a religious perspective, centered in Nay Pyi Taw. He called for participation of all concerned officials and people in implementing these endeavours with the democracy spirit.
Then, the SAC Chairman presented land permits for religious affairs to the representatives of Buddhism, Christians, Islams and Hinduism respectively.
Next, relevant officials from religious organizations expressed words of thanks, stating that although they practice different religions, it is true that all religions must come together to work for state peace, prosperity, and coexistence.
Officials also expressed their gratitude to the SAC Chairman for facilitating the formation of religious buildings in one place. After the meeting, the SAC Chairman hosted luncheon to the Chairmen of the interfaith groups and officials.
