






A strong earthquake occurred at 12:51 PM on March 28, causing significant damage in the Sagaing Region, Mandalay Region, Shan State, Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory, and Bago Region.
The damage included the destruction of railway tracks, bridges, and rail stations, including the historic Inwa Bridge of Myanma Railways. The railways affected include the Yangon-Mandalay route, where 23 locations of track damage occurred between Kyaukdaga and Taungoo, seven locations of track damage and three bridge failures between Taungoo and Nay Pyi Taw, thirty locations of track damage and eight bridge failures along the Thazi-Mandalay route, two bridge failures along the Thazi-Meiktila route, and eleven locations of track damage and two bridge failures along the Pyin Oo Lwin-Taung Twin Gyi route.
As a result of the damage, passenger and freight trains along the Yangon-Mandalay and Pyin Oo Lwin-Taung Twin Gyi routes were temporarily halted. However, passenger and freight trains continue to run regularly on the Yangon Circular, Yangon-Mawlamyine, Yangon-Pyay, Yangon-Bago, and Pathein-Kyankhin routes without significant disruptions.
Efforts to repair the damaged tracks and bridges are underway with the support of manpower, machinery, materials, and effective logistical support from Myanma Railways in respective region. The repair work is being carried out with the goal of restoring train services as soon as possible along the entire Yangon-Taungoo-Nay Pyi Taw-Thazi-Mandalay route.
