






To mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, over 200 million US dollars worth of seized narcotic drugs were destroyed in Yangon Region.
Union Minister for Home Affairs Lt-Gen Soe Htut attended the ceremony, held on Saturday.
25 different kinds of narcotics including heroin, stimulant tablets, marijuana, Ice, speciosa, Ketamine, Sodium Cyanide and Ammonium Nitrate.
The destroyed drugs in Yangon Region have been seized by the combined team of Anti-Drug Unit, Myanmar Police Force and Tatmadaw in Yangon, Ayeyawady, Bago and Taninthayi Regions, Rakhine, Mon, Kayah and Kayin States and also by the Highway Police Force.
Head, No.3 Anti-Drug Unit, Yangon Region, Police Lt-Col Moe Aung said "Together with Myanmar Police Force and Tatmadaw, we, the Anti-Drug Unit, is working in cooperation for the seizure of drugs as soon as we get the information. We are carrying out our duties as much as we can. I want the public to inform us about any drug case and cooperate with us in an effort for eliminating narcotic drugs."
Most of the destroyed drugs have been seized in Yangon Region, and the amount of drug seizure is 50 million more than the previous year.
Head, Yangon Region (North District), Police Lt-Col Hla Wai said "The amount of destroyed drugs worth over 207 billion kyats or 143 million US dollars last year. And this year's drug worth over 320 billion kyats or more than 200 million US dollars. Last year, we have seized most of the stimulant tablets in Rakhine State, and this year, we have the most seizure in Yangon Region. Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, we have allowed the transport of commodity goods easier than before for the convenience of the consumers. People misused the opportunity and transported the drugs in the disguise of commodity goods. So, we have more seizure of drugs in Yangon Region."
This year is the 34th time of destroying seized narcotic drugs. Similar ceremonies have been taken place in Taunggyi of Shan State and Mandalay in Upper Myanmar.
