China-Myanmar Power Cooperation: Kyaukphyu Power Plant to run commercial operation

Construction of the 135 MW Kyaukphyu Combined Cycle Gas Turbine Power Plant has now been 98 percent completed and is expected to go into commercial operation very soon.

This Kyaukphyu Combined Cycle Gas Turbine Power Plant is being developed by Chinese state-owned enterprise, Power China Resources Ltd, and Myanmar national company, Supreme Trading Company Limited, as the Independent Power Producer (IPP) under the Build Operate and Transfer (BOT) system. Total investment amount is around 200 million USD.

Deputy CEO, Kyaukphyu Electric Power Co., Ltd., David ZHU, said " We have very friendly relationship with Myanmar people around. Because when the power station is built, a lot of workers will be employed by us. After it goes into operation, we will continuously operate for 25 years, we will continuously improve employees’ ability to work, and also it will give local people job opportunities. This station is cooperation success between China and Myanmar. We focus on the contribution for win-win strategy. It will not only benefit to us, it also benefits for the local community.”

Electricity from this 135 MW Kyaukphyu Combined Cycle Gas Turbine Power Plant will be distributed to the National Grid and to the Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone, Madae Island and Kyaukphyu through the Kyaukphyu 230 KV Main Substation.

Deputy CEO, Kyaukphyu Electric Power Co., Ltd.,  David ZHU, said "Power station is clean, efficient, and green project. Gas/Steam combined cycle technology with the net capacity of 135 MW and annual net of a billion KW hrs. This project is initiated in 2019 and it begins into construction in the beginning of 2021. We can expect very soon, because we have already completed 98 percent of the construction work. And right now expecting looking forward to 168 hrs continuously running test. After, it will goes to commercial operation very soon”

The Power China Resources Ltd has invested and built five solar power stations with a total installed capacity of 160 MW in Magway, Mandalay and Bago regions of Myanmar, of which three solar projects have been synchronized to the grid for power generation, and have achieved excellent results in power generation in 2022, effectively helping Myanmar to obtain sufficient power.
