Back Home: Myanmar Delegation To Hague Arrived Back

Myanmar Delegation who attended the public hearing, concerning the application filed by the Gambia on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in the Peace Palace, the Hague of Netherlands, arrived back in Yangon on Wednesday.

Hundreds of people gathered at Yangon International Airport to welcome back the Myanmar delegation who made effective arguments for the country.

Secretary, Yangon Region Young Men Buddhist Association, Htein Lin said “We gathered here to welcome the Myanmar delegation led by Union Minister U Ko Ko Hlaing who went to ICJ to protect the country and brings honour for us. We really satisfied with the effective arguments made by the delegation before the court. We really appreciate the efforts of the delegation. Despite different views on race, religion and political backgrounds, all citizens must unamnimously support the Myanmar delegation who defend for the country.”

Led by the Agent of Myanmar, Union Minister for International Cooperation U Ko Ko Hlaing, the Alternate Agent of Myanmar, Union Minister for Legal Affairs, Attorney-General of the Union Dr. ThidaOo, the international counsels and advocates made effective arguments before the Court from the legal perspective that the Court lacks jurisdiction and/or The Gambia’s Application is inadmissible.

Member, Hlegu Nationalist Group, Shwe Ma Ma said “As a Myanmar citizen, we really satisfied with the effective arguments of Myanmar delegation that the court lacks jurisdiction and the Gambia’s application is inadmissible. We want to show our appreciation for the delegation and thus, we gathered here to welcome them.” 

CEC, National Development Party, Thet Tun said “It is very honourable to see the efforts of Myanmar delegation as they made effective arguments to defend the country. We really appreciate them as they made efforts for the country to stand tall and long lasting.”

Gambia, on behalf of the OIC, alleged the Republic of the Union of Myanmar of violating the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

During the public hearing from 21st to 28th February, Myanmar made first round of oral argument on the 21st, followed by Gambia’s presentation of first round of oral argument on the 23rd. After that Myanmar made its second round of oral argument on the 25th and Gambia on the 28th respectively.

The Court’s decision on the preliminary objections will be delivered at a public sitting and the date of which will be announced in due course.
