A coordination meeting on increasing electricity generation was held by the Ministry of Electricity and Energy on April 22, at the Ministry of Electricity and Energy, in Nay Pyi Taw.

First, Union Minister U Ko Ko Lwin discussed and reviewed the prospects for increasing electricity generation and distribution. He stated that measures would be taken to improve distribution and explore other available methods. He also emphasized that ongoing electricity generation projects would be expedited by urging and supervising relevant organizations.

Regarding some hydropower projects, main power lines, and substations damaged by acts of sabotage, repairs would be carried out as quickly as possible. He noted that during the repair works, delays had occurred due to sabotage attacks that resulted in the deaths, injuries, and casualties of ministry staff.

The delay in completing projects meant that the public's electricity needs could not be fully met. He added that although LNG is expensive, it must continue to be used to meet demand for a certain period, and the government has already made arrangements.

Therefore, electricity generated from LNG is being distributed at a special rate of 900 kyats per unit via a dedicated power line without interruptions to industrial zones and major enterprises. He also stated that during the current hot season, efforts would be made to allow the public greater access to electricity by systematically utilizing available energy resources and managing power generation.

After calculating the electricity generation systems, the measures will be implemented to effectively generate and distribute electricity using increased natural gas supplies, in addition to current generation from hydropower plants, natural gas power plants, coal-fired power plants, and solar power plants.

Accordingly, electricity distribution hours will be increased. The distribution in Yangon Region, will be increased from 16–18 hours to 18–20 hours, from 14–16 hours to 16–18 hours in Mandalay Region and from approximately 12 hours to a minimum of 14 hours per day in other states and regions, starting from 3:00 PM of April 22.
