Leader of the Information Team of the National Defence and Security Council Maj-Gen Zaw Min Tun, clarified fuel usage restrictions on Wednesday.
The announcement, which restricts the use of private vehicles starting March 7, 2026, comes amid ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. These conflicts have disrupted shipping routes for fuel imports. Maj-Gen Zaw Min Tun emphasized that the restrictions are not due to a shortage of reserve fuel but are a precautionary measure for long-term stability.
He said the announcement is aimed at ensuring systematic fuel usage in Myanmar, taking into account the global situation. The country currently consumes 1.5 million gallons of petrol and 1.7 million gallons of diesel daily, totaling around 3.2 million gallons per day.
Myanmar's fuel reserves are sufficient, with stockpiles of 60 million gallons of petrol and 70 million gallons of diesel, which can cover about 40 days of consumption. Additionally, two fuel tankers have already docked at the port, and 14 more are en route, expected to arrive in the coming days. Maj-Gen Zaw Min Tun also reassured the public that Myanmar primarily imports fuel from Singapore and Malaysia, and there is no immediate risk of a fuel shortage. However, he stressed that global fuel prices may rise due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
