As part of efforts to combat climate change and deforestation, a mass tree-planting campaign was launched on Friday across 13 districts in the country's central dry zone, as a 2025 monsoon-season public movement. State Administration Council Chairman Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing attended the event, held at Leintaw  Protected Forest in Meiktila District.

In his address, the Prime Minister highlighted that this is the first activity of its kind at the national level and emphasized the long-term environmental benefits of reforestation. He urged continued care for the planted trees under the motto "One tree planted, one tree nurtured", stressing that though the results won't be immediate, future generations will benefit.

The Prime Minister later planted neem sapling, followed by planting of saplings by the attendees. A total of 3,200 saplings of six various hard woods were planted at the event in Leintaw Protected Forest. The central regions, Mandalay, Sagaing, and Magway, suffer most from extreme heat, drought, and low rainfall.

To address this, nearly 34,950 trees were planted across 29 townships, including timber, shade, and fruit-bearing species. This initiative reflects Myanmar’s target to increase national forest cover from the current 42.19% to 50%, with an emphasis on sustainability and climate resilience.

After the ceremony, the Prime Minister visited Meiktila University of Economics, where he was briefed on earthquake damage from the recent Mandalay quake. He pledged support for repairs and improvements, including campus beautification and tree maintenance.
