The Tirangular Partnership Programme was launched in 2015 and Japan is leading the efforts. Although Japan withdrew most of its dispatched peacekeepers in 2017, it still sends some senior officials of the Self-Defense Force. The programme offers training for uniformed peacekeepers, through cooperation among the United Nations, troop-contributing countries and supporting member states.
Japan was the only supporting member state when the programme was launched, but since then, the number of supporting nations has increased to 42 and more than 100 countries are involved in the programme, including those that send trainees. The training of peacekeepers is underway in Nairobi, Kenya. Japanese instructors are tasked with teaching 30 officials from countries such as Kenya and Uganda.
