Vichy Pastilles marked their 200th anniversary in 2025, two centuries after their invention in 1825 by Parisian chemist Jean-Pierre-Joseph d’Arcet. D’Arcet developed the pastilles during a health retreat in Vichy, aiming to reproduce the therapeutic effects of the town’s mineral-rich waters. Initially sold in pharmacies, the pastilles served medicinal purposes, promoted for aiding digestion and freshening breath.
Following the First World War, the product transitioned into the confectionery market. Industrial-scale production began in 1932 and the pastilles have been continuously manufactured since then. The formula evolved over time, with reduced mineral salt and increased sugar content to suit changing tastes.
Traditional mint remained the most popular flavour, but new variants such as lemon and aniseed were added. Today, around 1.4 million pastilles are consumed daily, reflecting their lasting popularity. Recent years have seen resurgence in interest, particularly among younger consumers drawn to the brand's heritage and refreshing flavour.
