Union Minister for Immigration and Population U Myint Kyaing received the representatives from multiracial and religious groups at the ministry in Naypyidaw on 22nd October.

During the meeting, the Union Minister emphasized the need for those who do not yet possess any form of national identification card to hold a National Verification (NV) Card as proof of identity and to continue applying for citizenship in accordance with established procedures.

He highlighted that the ministry is currently implementing Pankhin project nationwide, issuing household registration certificates, and distributing national identification cards, in addition to conducting population censuses.

These activities aim to ensure that all eligible citizens can vote in the upcoming general election by possessing a valid identification card, and to maintain accurate voter lists. The Union Minister also explained the ongoing implementation of e-ID system, which involves collecting biometric and biographic data for each individual and issuing a Unique ID number.

The minister urged the attendees to encourage those in their communities who have not yet participated in the census or received their Unique ID number to contact the relevant ministry officials to complete these processes.

Next, the representatives from multi racial and religious groups discussed the challenges faced during the application process for national identity cards for their family members, such as difficulties in providing personal documentation.

They also raised concerns about issuing identity cards and household registration certificates for citizens who have temporarily relocated, as well as the need to raise awareness regarding the census and Unique ID system.

Deputy Ministers U Htay Hlaing and Dr. Myo Thant, along with directors-general from the departments, responded to these issues, explaining the legal frameworks and procedures involved, and assured that steps would be taken to reduce delays in the process. The Union Minister also reiterated the ministry’s commitment to facilitating and expediting the smooth implementation of these tasks.
