President U Min Aung Hlaing and wife Daw Kyu Kyu Hla attended a traditional Lao Baci ceremony in Luang Prabang on Sunday, as part of a cultural engagement during their visit.

The ceremony began with the President lighting the auspicious ceremonial oil lamp, marking the formal opening of the event. The gesture is widely regarded in Lao traditions as a symbol of respect, prosperity, and goodwill.

The Baci ceremony, also known as the “Sou Khuan” ritual, is a deeply rooted spiritual practice in Lao culture. It is commonly performed to restore harmony between the body and soul, and to bring good fortune, health, and protection to participants.

During a typical Baci ceremony, white cotton strings are tied around the wrists of participants by elders or spiritual guides. These strings are believed to “bind” good spirits to the person, ensuring balance, luck, and well-being. Prayers and blessings are also recited, often accompanied by offerings of food, flowers, and traditional music.
