A commemoration ceremony for the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction was held at Myanmar International Convention Center II in Nay Pyi Taw on Wednesday, with the attendance of Chairman of the National Disaster Management Committee, Vice Chairman of the State Administration Council, Deputy Prime Minister Vice Senior General Soe Win.
In his speech, the Vice Senior General highlighted that this year's celebration was held with the theme “Fighting Inequality for a Resilient Future.” According to the 2022 global report, approximately 400 disasters with mass destruction occurred annually until 2015, and it is estimated that this number will rise to around 560 by 2030.
In 2022, over 16,000 people globally lost their lives due to natural disasters, resulting in extensive damages. In Myanmar, the very severe cyclonic storm Mocha caused significant damage in Rakhine and Chin States.
However, due to prior necessary preparation measures, the loss and damages were significantly reduced compared to those experienced in 2008, when Cyclone Nargis struck. With the concept of "No one left behind," relief and rehabilitation measures have been executed through collaborative efforts by local authorities and well-wishers from both domestic and international sources, all under the guidance of the Chairman of the State Administration Council.
As a result of these concerted efforts, the situation has returned to normalcy within a short period of time. The Vice Senior General emphasized the imperative to work towards building a disaster-resilient community through sustained and robust preparation measures in the long run.
Then, the video message sent by the Head of UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction was screen, followed by explanation on disaster management measures by the Vice Chairman (2) of the Management Committee, Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr Soe Win. Afterwards, a dramatic performance by the staff of Disaster Management Department was staged, followed by the display of documentary program on before and aftermath of cyclone Mocha.
The winners of commemorative essay and painting competitions at middle and high school levels were awarded during the ceremony. After the ceremony, the Vice Senior General and party viewed the display of the commemorative photos.
