Preservation of Ozone Layer: Union Minister attends the commemorating ceremony

A celebration of commemorating 2023 International Day for the Preservation of Ozone Layer was held at the Department of Environmental Conservation, Nay Pyi Taw in the morning on 15th September.

Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation U Khin Maung Yi attended the ceremony and made a speech, saying that this year’s theme for the World Ozone Day is “Montreal Protocol: Reducing Climate Change to Fixing the Ozone Layer”.

It aims to protect the ozone layer and reduce the climate change by reducing the use of Hydro Fluorocarbon-HFC which is a greenhouse gas.

Myanmar has signed an agreement to be a member of the Montreal Additional Protocol and 4 additional amendments to control the impacts of Ozone depletion on human health and environment, and participated in international activities related to the protection of Ozone layer.

He also said the usage of HFC will be limited starting from 2024 and reduce to 80 percent by 2045. He added that, it is important to import and distribute refrigerants that have less energy consumption and low carbon emissions to reduce the higher temperature of today world and damage on the Ozone layer.

He also stressed the need to organize educative awareness campaigns to reduce the use of substances that have higher impact for global warming.

At the same time, accelerated efforts are needed to conduct technical trainings and research activities that cannot harm the Ozone layer, climate and environment. The Union Minister urged all departments, organizations, researchers and public to participate in the process of climate change mitigation and protection of Ozone layer.

Next, the video message sent by the Secretary General of United Nations was read out, followed by screening of the educative video to commemorate the International Day for the Preservation of Ozone Layer. Then, the Union Minister and participants observed the displays of commemorative posters at the commemorative booths.
