Mrauk-U, the ancient city of Rakhine State is being undertaken to be described on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Mrauk-U ancient city was established in 1430s and it was a strong fort city.

In the past, Portuguese and Dutch tourists called Mrauk U as the golden capital as it had been a strategic place for trading goods and commodities transported from far-flung areas and because of its precious jewelries.

The final proposal for Mrauk-U to be listed as the World Heritage site was submitted to UNSECO on 30th December 2021. Experts from the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) will make a field study to Mrauk U soon.

The meeting of the World Heritage Committee that will be held in June or July 2023 will decide whether Mrauk-U should be listed as a World Heritage site or not.

If Mrauk U is designated as the world heritage site, it will support improvement of socio-economic life of the locals and creating job opportunities. The information center of Mrauk U Archaeological museum will be extended and a lab to clean artifacts will be undertaken.
