Bilateral Meeting: Myanmar and Cambodia Discussed for Cooperation

Myanmar-Cambodia bilateral meeting was held at the meeting hall of the office of the State Administration Council Chairman in Nay Pyi Taw on 7thJanuary.

Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen said there were reciprocal assistance between the two countries for prevention, control and treatment of COVID-19, and expressed thanks for Myanmar’s contributions of COVID-19 vaccines to Cambodia.

COVID-19 vaccination has been provided to Myanmar citizens who are in Cambodia. He stressed for reaching agreement on easing of tax in order to promote cooperation in bilateral trade, and drafting of new plan for cooperation in education sector.

Concerning the tourism sector, the Cambodian Prime Minister discussed for speedy implementation of tourist sister cities between Bagan and Siem Reap, and reopening of air routes once the COVID-19 disease was under control. Chairman of the State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing expressed that the visit of Cambodian Prime Minister reflects the further strengthening of bilateral relations.

Since the two foreign ministries have signed MOA for policy cooperation, the arrangements are needed to make for holding the meetings at a convenient time. The Senior General also congratulated Cambodia for successful implementation of 3-year plan for COVID-19 prevention and development of the country.

He stressed for signing MOU on easing of double tax collection, promoting cooperation on bilateral trade, and opening of air route between the two countries for tourism when the COVID-19 containment measures were implemented to some extent.

The Senior General also mentioned that a Cambodian monk and 249 nuns have been pursuing Buddhist teachings at the Buddhist Missionary University in Myanmar from 1999 to 2020. The Cambodian monastery was also opened in Yangon and cooperation will be made for flourishing of Buddhism between the two countries.

This year also, a Cambodian monk and a layperson were conferred religious titles. The MOA for Education Cooperation (2017-2021) will be extended, and cooperation will be made for defence sector. He also expressed thanks for Cambodia’s constructive stand for Myanmar in the international arean and ASEAN region as well.

He said efforts are being made for regional development and stability in the country. During the tenure of SAC, over 48,000 prisoners have been granted amnesty. Myanmar designated this year as the year for peace, and he welcomed the cooperation of the Cambodia’s Special Envoy for Myanmar peace process.
