Signing SPS Agreement: Myanmar and China Signed SPS Agreement

It’s being implemented to sign the Sanitary and Phytosanitary-SPS agreements with the People’s Republic of China which is a major and neighboring market for the trade of Myanmar agro-products. During the state visit of the President of PRC Mr. Xi Jinping to Myanmar in January, 2020, the Sanitary and Phytosanitary-SPS agreements were signed between the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation and GACC to export rice/broken rice, dry silk cocoon and live cattle to China from Myanmar. The maize seeds have been approved to export to China from Myanmar as animal food.

The trial export of pickled corn has been agreed by both sides. The Sanitary and Phytosanitary-SPS agreement was signed by U Tin Htut OO Union Minister for the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation and the Minister of General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China- GACC on 31st January.

The agreement will be beneficial for exporting maize and animal food pickled corn through marine trade routes and border trade routes to China, enhancement for bilateral trade of agricultural products between Myanmar and China and the better interest for the maize farmers.

For the time being, the ministry of agriculture, livestock and irrigation and GACC are establishing animal quarantine stations near the border gates for the live cattle export and currently an animal quarantine station has been established in Kutkai Township.

In addition, the negotiations are being conducted to sign MoUs for exporting Myanmar’s agricultural products of soybean, cassava and sweet potato to China and also bilateral coordination and exchange of data are being facilitated to sign sanitary and phytosanitary-SPS agreements for the prospective new export items such as pineapple, avocado, pomelo, lime and fresh betel nut. During 2020-2021 fiscal year, Myanmar earned 5427.958 USD from exporting agriculture, animal and marine products to China, accordint to the sources.
