Opening Ceremony of NCC: Acting President SSPC Chairman inaugurated NCC

To welcome and commemorate the 81st Anniversary Armed Forces Day (2026), the opening ceremony of the National Cancer Center (NCC) in Dagon Seikkan Township, Yangon Region, was held in the morning of March 7th.

The Acting President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and Chairman of the State Security and Peace Commission, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, attended and inaugurated the center.

First, after the Acting President SSPC Chairman and officials arrived at the ceremony venue, the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the opening of the National Cancer Center (NCC) was performed by Council Member and Prime Minister U Nyo Saw, Union Ministers U Tin Aung San, Dr. Thet Khaing Win, U Myo Thant, and Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thein.

Following this, the Acting President SSPC Chairman pressed the button to officially unveil the signboard of the National Cancer Center (NCC) and sprinkled scented water on the commemorative plaque of the new 5-storey treatment building of the National Cancer Center.

Subsequently, Council Member and Prime Minister, Union Ministers, and the Region Chief Minister also sprinkled scented water on the commemorative plaque.

Afterwards, the Acting President SSPC Chairman and officials arrived at the new 8-storey treatment building and sprinkled scented water on its commemorative plaque. The Acting President SSPC Chairman and the attendees then inspected the radiotherapy machine rooms for cancer treatment inside the building. He gave necessary guidance based on the explanations provided by the Union Minister for Health and the specialist doctors in charge of each machine room. Following the inspection, the second part of the opening ceremony for the National Cancer Center (NCC) continued in the meeting hall of the 8-storey treatment building.

In his opening address, the Acting President SSPC Chairman stated that with the opening of the National Cancer Center, built with state funds, today marks an auspicious day for the nation's health sector and a day where a new milestone is achieved. He expressed his great pride and joy that the opening in commemoration of the 81st Anniversary Armed Forces Day (2026). He spoke about the situation of setting and implementing directions to strengthen the foundations for the country's future development throughout the current government's tenure.

He highlighted the successful navigation of significant challenges in the health sector during the 5-year tenure, including the dedication and teamwork of health personnel who sacrificed and worked together to provide healthcare services during COVID-19 pandemic and natural disasters like Cyclone Mocha, Typhoon Yagyi, and the Mandalay earthquake. Regarding the development of health sector infrastructure, he mentioned that 41 new hospital buildings and staff quarters were constructed within the 5 years

. Myanmar has formulated the "National Strategic Plan for Cancer Control (2023-2027)" and is implementing it as a national strategy for cancer prevention, control, and treatment. To reduce waiting times for cancer patients needing radiotherapy, necessary funds for purchasing and installing radiotherapy machines were given special priority.

Consequently, Myanmar now has a total of 26 radiotherapy machines and 9 brachytherapy devices installed and in use for treatment. Since 2021, 7 new radiotherapy machines have been installed in major hospitals in Yangon, Mandalay, and Nay Pyi Taw. Thus, public hospitals and departments under the Ministry of Health now have 5 radiotherapy centers, 15 radiotherapy machines, and 4 brachytherapy devices. Additionally, military hospitals now have 4 radiotherapy centers, 4 radiotherapy machines, and 1 brachytherapy device capable of providing treatment.

The private sector has also been permitted to provide treatment with advanced radiotherapy machines, resulting in private hospitals having 5 radiotherapy centers, 7 radiotherapy machines, and 4 brachytherapy devices in operation.

The National Cancer Center inaugurated today was intended to be opened as a One-stop Comprehensive Care Center to provide complete medical treatment and conduct research for cancer patients. The state has allocated over 34 billion Kyats for the 5-storey and 8-storey treatment buildings and radiotherapy machine rooms, over 12 billion Kyats for staff quarters, and over 30 billion Kyats during the 2024-2025 fiscal year for three new radiotherapy machines. It is also known that a machine donated by philanthropists this year is valued at over 19 billion Kyats, and he expressed gratitude for the donation.

The National Cancer Center is a facility designed for long-term use over many years and is a significant institution for the benefit of the people. Therefore, it will remain a milestone in the history of the Ministry of Health. He concluded his speech by wishing everyone good physical and mental health and the ability to further strive for the benefit of the people.

Then, the Acting President SSPC Chairman and the attendees watched a commemorative video about the opening of the National Cancer Center (NCC). Afterwards, the Union Minister for Health respectfully presented a commemorative gift for the opening of the National Cancer Center (NCC) to the Acting President SSPC Chairman.

Subsequently, to the Acting President SSPC Chairman and his family donated funds for the National Cancer Center, which were accepted by the Union Minister for Health.

Following this, the Union Minister for Construction handed over the documents related to the National Cancer Center (NCC) building, and the Union Minister for Health received them, presenting a certificate of honor in return. Finally, the Union Minister for Health expressed gratitude regarding the successful opening of the National Cancer Center (NCC), it’s reported.
