Union Minister for Health, Professor Dr. Thet Khaing Win, attended and delivered a speech at the launch and awareness event for the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system in the Nay Pyi Taw Council area, held at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Health in Nay Pyi Taw on February 18.
In his opening remarks, the Union Minister highlighted that the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system plays a critical role in responding to road accidents. The newly launched EMS system in the Nay Pyi Taw Council area will initially operate through nine ambulance stations—seven under the Ministry of Health and two under the Myanmar Red Cross Society—across seven townships in Nay Pyi Taw.
The primary focus will be on providing emergency care for road accident victims. The Union Minister expressed his hope that this initiative would serve as a model for implementing similar systems in other regions and states. He urged all stakeholders to contribute wholeheartedly to the success of the program.
Following this, Chairman of the Nay Pyi Taw Council U Than Tun Oo discussed the current situation of road accidents in the Nay Pyi Taw area and the ongoing efforts to enhance road safety.
He expressed his delight at the launch of the EMS system, which addresses a critical need in the region, and pledged continued support for its implementation. Director-General of the Medical Services Department Dr. Myat Wanna Soe, then provided an overview of the preparations for the EMS system in the Nay Pyi Taw Council area. Attendees also toured a small exhibition showcasing the system’s features.
Later, the Union Minister, Nay Pyi Taw Council Chairman and officials visited the "EMS 192 Command and Control Center" at Nay Pyi Taw’s 1,000-bed People’s Hospital. They observed the operations, including a demonstration of patient rescue and transport using ambulances, and inspected the readiness of ambulance crews and equipment.
The EMS system launched today covers nine ambulance stations across the townships of Zabu Thiri, Ottara Thiri, Pobbathiri, Dekkhina Thiri, Zeyar Thiri, Lewe, and Pyinmana in Nay Pyi Taw. In case of road accidents, residents can call the emergency hotline "192" to request ambulance services.
Additionally, the Ministry of Health has established ten ambulance stations along the Yangon-Mandalay Expressway, collaborating with the Highway Police, Fire Brigade, and Red Cross teams to provide emergency medical services for accident victims along the expressway.
In the afternoon, Union Minister Dr. Thet Khaing Win met with Mr. Thushara Fernando, the WHO Representative for Myanmar, and his team at the Ministry of Health and Sports' conference room.
During the meeting, they discussed ongoing collaborative health care initiatives between the Ministry of Health and Sports and the World Health Organization (WHO), priority health issues to be addressed by the Ministry in 2025, and matters for continued cooperation between the Ministry and WHO. The meeting was held in a cordial and friendly atmosphere, with both parties exchanging views.
