Chin traditional Khuado festival “Khuado Pawipi” also known as the harvest festival was held at Myanmar Baptist Convention, Judson memorial hall in Yangon on Tuesday.

Every year, around October and November, after harvesting the crops, the Zomi which is a major ethnic group of Chin nationals across the country holds the Khuado festival to pray for more crops in coming years and each others’ health and wealth. The festival is held annually at the same time in Yangon as well to preserve the culture, custom and language of the Zomi ethnic group.

Member, Organizing Committee, Htaung Man said “This is identifying the Zomi ethnic group’s culture, custom, language and background for new generation who are away from the Chin State. This year, the main Khuado Festival was successfully held in Tedim Township together with high ranking officials. We will continue the celebration every year.”

The celebration included prayer section, performances, paying obeisance ceremony to the elders and many more.

Student, Niang Sian Hing said “We, the students, will perform traditional dances – I’m proud to preserve the Zomi ethnic group’s culture, custom and language.”

Participant, Dim Tawi Lian said “I’m a Chin national staying in the urban area so I do appreciate this kind of celebration in the urban area like in Yangon every year. Here, we can meet with our Zomi people.”

Khuado is the most popular occasion on the Zomi calendar. It’s the biggest festival of the year celebrated by the Zomi.
