Union Minister for Labour U Myint Naung met with officials from Myanmar Garment Manufacturers Association at the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI) in Yangon Region on Friday.
In his opening speech, the Union Minister said plans are underway to assess and grant recognition certificates by the National Skill Standard Authority to 53 garment factories in Yangon and Bago Regions. He expressed appreciation for the active participation of these factories in the skill development process.
The attendees at the meeting provided updates on their ongoing projects, and the Minister coordinated to address their needs. He emphasized the vital role of the garment industry in generating employment opportunities for citizens, contributing to foreign currency earnings for the state, and producing skilled labor.
He pledged to collaborate with the Myanmar Garment Manufacturers Association and other partner organizations to further the industry's success, boost exports, and drive economic development.
The Union Minister urged everyone involved to exert diligent efforts toward the socio-economic advancement of workers and the overall economic progress of the state. The garment and textile industry in Myanmar has a rich history, dating back to traditional hand weaving, and it underwent modernization after the enactment of the Foreign Investment Law in 1988.
Despite challenges such as sanctions in 2003, the industry has shown resilience and growth, with 788 factories currently operating through Cut-Make-Pack (CMP) practices and achieving over 4.3 billion US dollars in export earnings from January to September this year.
