The Myanmar National Human Rights Commission (MNHRC) plays a pivotal role in upholding and safeguarding human rights as stipulated in Chapter 5 of the Commission Law.
During the first half of 2024, the MNHRC diligently pursued its mandate through various initiatives aimed at protecting and promoting human rights across the nation. From January to June 2024, the MNHRC received a total of 135 complaints, demonstrating its vital role as a recourse for individuals facing human rights violations.
These complaints underwent thorough scrutiny by the Complaint Investigation Team, which held 25 screening meetings to assess their validity and urgency. Of the received complaints, 31 cases were referred to pertinent government bodies for necessary actions.18 cases were guided towards alternative channels or remedies more suited to their concerns.85 cases were formally recorded, with some still under judicial review or appeal processes.1 case was successfully closed with the consent of the complainant.
Throughout this process, the MNHRC ensured transparency and accountability by keeping complainants informed about responses from Union Ministries, Nay Pyi Taw Council, and regional governments. In adherence to Article 43 of the Commission Law, the MNHRC Inspection Team conducted extensive visits to various facilities.
During these inspections, the team rigorously assessed the conditions of detainees, verifying adherence to international and national human rights standards. Key areas of scrutiny included the treatment of detainees, adequacy of facilities, living conditions, healthcare provisions, and the prevention of torture.
A total of 33 detainees were interviewed privately to gather firsthand accounts and statements.Through ongoing efforts, the MNHRC remains dedicated to fostering a society where human rights are respected, protected, and upheld for all individuals within Myanmar's borders.
