In the wake of a devastating earthquake that struck on March 28, international search and rescue teams have been working alongside local responders to assist in recovery efforts.
The powerful tremors resulted in significant destruction, prompting swift action to locate and rescue survivors trapped in rubble. Among the teams providing assistance is the Operation Lionheart Contingent under the Singapore Civil Defence Force led by Col. Tay Zhi Wei.
The team arrived at Yangon International Airport on March 29, with a total of 80 personnel, including commanders, medical professionals, paramedics, structural engineers, rescuers, and liaison officers.
Additionally, the team brought four highly trained search and rescue dogs to help with the operation. Upon arrival at Nay Pyi Taw, the Singapore contingent worked closely with Myanmar’s Fire Services Department to continue search and rescue missions. The team conducted life-sign assessments in various locations to check for survivors.
They successfully rescued one person from a collapsed building behind the Aung Thapyay Cinema in Nay Pyi Taw. As part of the ongoing collaboration, the Singapore team also donated a range of essential equipment to the Myanmar Fire Services Department to aid in the rescue operations. These equipment are expected to significantly support ongoing search and rescue operations and provide essential supplies for both rescue teams and displaced individuals. T
