









The fifth coordination meeting of the Electricity and Energy Development Commission was held on February 24th at the Office of the National Defence and Security Council meeting hall in Nay Pyi Taw.
The meeting was attended by the Chairman of the Electricity and Energy Development Commission, Union Minister for the Ministry (1) of the President’s Office U Tin Aung San, Commission Vice-Chairmen, Commission members Union Ministers, the Chairman of the Nay Pyi Taw Council and responsible officials, while Chief Ministers of Regions and States participated via an online system.
Firstly, the Chairman of the Electricity and Energy Development Commission, Union Minister U Tin Aung San, stated that the fifth meeting of the Commission was being convened to continue accelerating electricity and energy sector activities and to implement future work programs in line with the current policies and directives of the State. He emphasized the need to strive to meet the nation's electricity demand by generating power from available resources.
He noted that hydropower is a clean, renewable energy source with low production costs, making it essential to implement major hydropower projects capable of meeting the country's future electricity needs. In the energy sector, pilot projects utilizing AI technology to increase natural gas production from thin sand layers have commenced.
2D Seismic surveys have been completed in Kyaiklat Township, Ayeyarwady Region, and Twantay Township and Kungyangon Township, Yangon Region, with activities underway for drilling and production. A Production Sharing Contract has been signed for the offshore block M-10 (Min Ye Thu Project). The new refinery project Phase I at No. 1 Refinery (Thanlyin) will soon become operational, marking the first major refinery to be opened since the Thanpayakan Refinery, the last one opened in 1982.
He urged concerted efforts to implement new, crucial offshore projects for the future energy sector on schedule. He invited participants to present progress updates from their respective sectors and suggest solutions for any challenges requiring attention. Following this, the Commission Vice-Chairman (1), Union Minister for Electric Power U Nyan Tun, and the Vice-Chairman (2), Union Minister for Energy U Ko Ko Lwin, respectively clarified progress made in the electricity and energy sectors since the fourth meeting, current implementation status, and future work plans and projects.
Subsequently, the Commission Secretary and Joint Secretary clarified the actions taken based on the decisions of the Commission meeting (4/2025) concerning the electricity and energy sectors and the implementation status by Union Ministries and Region/State governments.
Commission members Union Ministers attending the meeting then discussed and presented their respective ministries' implementation activities related to the electricity and energy sector and offered suggestions. Afterwards, the Chairman of the Nay Pyi Taw Council, Chief Ministers of Regions and States, and other attendees engaged in collective discussions regarding ongoing activities within the Union Territory, Regions, and States, the status of future work/projects, and the challenges faced.
