The UK government approved drilling in the North Sea Jackdaw gas field on Wednesday. It also said Jackdaw was expected to increase domestic gas production by around six percent at its peak and add an estimated 2.9 billion euros to the UK economy.

The Energy Secretary granted the green light after a Scottish court previously overturned prior approval due to unassessed carbon emissions. Prime Minister Andy Burnham defended the decision as a pragmatic move to protect hundreds of jobs, support energy security, and keep homes warm.
