Sagaing Region Chief Minister U Ko Lay and officials met with 120 cotton farmers from 12 villages in Monywa Township at the farm of U Aye Kyaw in Chanmyawady Ward on Friday.
The Chief Minister urged agricultural officials and farmers to work together to achieve targeted yields, strengthen pest and disease prevention, apply chemical and natural fertilizers in balanced proportions, ensure adequate irrigation and adopt systematic harvesting practices to maintain cotton quality and reduce post-harvest losses.
Officials were also instructed to provide field-level support, with a target yield of 700 to 1,000 viss per acre. The regional government has stockpiled fertilizers and fuels and is supplying them to farmers at affordable prices. Efforts are also underway to ensure adequate irrigation water and favourable market prices for harvested cotton.
The Chief Minister stressed the need for efficient water management amid the risk of rising temperatures associated with El Niño. They later inspected thriving conditions of long-staple cotton variety RaKa 666 at the farm of U Aye Kyaw. The Chief Minister also coordinated the farmers’ needs after the inspection and warmly greeted them.
