Sri Lanka has introduced new regulations banning the import of goods produced wholly or partly through forced labour. The move aligns the country’s trade policy with international labour standards and aims to strengthen ethical sourcing practices. The order, which came into effect on the 10th of July, prohibits the import of any goods that are mined, manufactured or processed wholly or partly using forced labour.

Under the regulations, the Minister will periodically identify the goods or countries to which the restrictions apply, taking into account decisions and standards of the International Labour Organization. Importers will also be required to submit documentation to the Director General of Customs confirming that the goods they import have not been produced or manufactured using forced labour.
