The Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation (YESC) is taking major steps to modernize and strengthen the city’s power infrastructure.
Under its ongoing projects, YESC is installing a total of 22 new transformers across Dawbon, Thaketa, and Mingalataungnyunt townships.
Dawbon Township, which pioneered the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system in Myanmar, has shifted from the traditional door-to-door meter reading to a more efficient server-based handheld system. The upgrade ensures accurate meter readings and better power management, especially in areas experiencing a surge in apartment construction.
Aye Kyaw,Manager (East District), Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation said " We regularly assess whether existing transformers can handle the growing load. If they cannot, we install new units. To date, we have already installed about 200 200KV transformers in Dawbon Township, preventing transformer overloads and ensuring a reliable power supply."
The project aligns with both short-term and long-term planning goals. Under the 100-day plan, YESC aims to install 45 transformers across townships in the Yangon Region, with 38 transformers already planned for six townships in the East District. Currently, 65% of the work in the East District has been completed.
Aye Kyaw,Manager (East District), Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation said " These upgrades are critical for stable voltage supply and overall power system development. By proactively reinforcing the grid, we are supporting Yangon’s growth while minimizing power disruptions for residents and businesses alike."
YESC continues to monitor and expand Yangon’s electrical infrastructure to meet the demands of the city’s rapid urbanization and increasing energy needs.
