Preparations are underway for the 2026 Myanmar New Year Thingyan Festival, which is recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage. This year, a “Walking Thingyan” format will be encouraged instead of using vehicles.

In Myitkyina of Kachin State, plans have been made to build the central pandal and organize a “Walking Thingyan” along major roads, along with traditional pavilions and small water-play areas. Authorities emphasized holding the festival in line with traditional culture, ensuring a lively celebration where the public can safely and happily participate.

In Mandalay, plans are underway to organize a lively Thingyan celebration while promoting fuel saving. Events in Mandalay will include traditional performances, dance competitions, cultural displays, and participation by students and local groups. Officials said the celebrations aim to highlight Myanmar’s cultural heritage while ensuring a festive and enjoyable atmosphere.

In Yangon, traditional ethnic dances and Yein competitions will be held at the Maha Thingyan Pandal to celebrate the festival. The dance troupes are urged to enlist for participation not later than March 31 at the Yangon City Development Committee Office in Botahtaung Township.
