A coordination meeting was held on Tuesday regarding the procedures for the damage assessment and rebuilding of structures affected by the earthquake that occurred on March 28.
Union Minister for Construction U Myo Thant attended the meeting where the experts present findings on the types of earthquakes and events that occurred in Myanmar, the structural damage caused by the earthquake, the procedures for inspection, repair, and reconstruction, and the solutions in collaboration with domestic and international experts.
The Union Minister coordinated the needs to ensure that all necessary actions are taken to resolve the challenges brought on by the earthquake. It is learnt that teams for technical inspection of damaged buildings and infrastructure will be formed according to regional needs.
These teams will utilize modern testing equipment to assess the damages, and prioritize actions based on whether the repairs are minor, major, or if buildings need to be completely demolished due to safety risks. In line with national guidelines, the damaged buildings will be systematically inspected following international standards, with an initial rapid visual inspection. After that, detailed structural inspections will be conducted to assess the full extent of the damages.
Additionally, the teams will continue to inspect and document the damages, evaluate possible repair strategies, and identify methods for further action. The inspection teams will consist of experts from the Myanmar Engineering Council, Myanmar Engineering Association, Myanmar Architects Council, high-rise and public building construction inspection experts, Myanmar Earthquake Committee members, and the Special Task Force.
These teams, along with the skilled engineers from the Ministry of Construction will begin assessments in Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay, and Sagaing, and will continue inspections in other quake-hit areas. The Ministry of Construction plans to incorporate any necessary additions and amendments into the upcoming Myanmar National Building Code (MNBC-2025) to further assist in the construction of buildings.
