On 17 April, President Office issued orders on the release and sentence reductions of thousands of prisoners to mark the Myanmar New Year and promote public peace and humanitarian considerations.

A total of 4,335 prisoners from various prisons were granted amnesty. Under the orders, death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment, long-term sentences exceeding 40 years were reduced to 40 years, and shorter sentences were cut by one-sixth of the remaining term.

Released prisoners are required to serve any remaining sentence if they reoffend. In addition, 179 foreign nationals were granted amnesty and will be deported to their home countries. The measures were issued under Section 204(a) of the State Constitution and Section 401(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, reflecting a focus on humanitarian considerations and national reconciliation.
