On Sunday, Union Minister of Health, Professor Dr. Thet Khaing Win visited the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in Dagon Seikkan Township.
At the NCI’s briefing hall, the Union Minister and party received updates on work completion status from the officials of Department of Buildings. The Union Minister said that the installation of a CT Simulator for radiation therapy machines, with initial clinical training and treatments, is set to begin in the third week of October.
The recent installation of a Linear Accelerator will enable the facility to treat 50 to 100 cancer patients daily, with plans to expand capacity to 200 patients per day with two additional machines by December. This international-standard facility aims to reduce patient wait times and overseas treatment costs, ensuring safe and effective care.
The Union Minister then inspected the completion status of the L-shaped eight-storey building for cancer patients and three staff housing units for NCI medical personnel, both constructed by the Ministry of Construction. In 2023, the Ministry of Health introduced a new radiation therapy machine at Mandalay General Hospital.
In 2024, another machine donated by India was commissioned into service at Yangon General Hospital. With the national fund, arrangements are being made to provide more convenient treatment options and to add more machines for cancer patients.
In the afternoon, the Union Minister and party visited the New Yangon Specialist Hospital construction project in Lanmadaw Township, assisted by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). There, they met with representatives from consulting firms, construction companies and relevant departments, instructing them to fully implement the project to meet international standards.
The Union Minister and party also inspected the construction site. The Ministry of Health and JICA has signed a Grant Agreement for the project. After suspension of the construction works during the COVID-19 period, the project has resumed operation in June 2024.
Upon completion, the New Yangon Specialist Hospital will serve as a premier facility specializing in cardiology, neurology and brain care, offering high-quality healthcare services to the public.
