NDSC Meeting 2/2024: Emergency declaration period extended next 6 months

The National Defence and Security Council of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar held a meeting 2/2024 at the meeting hall of the State Administration Council Chairman’s Office in Nay Pyi Taw on Wednesday.

Since the Pro Tem President duty has been transferred to the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services due to health condition of Pro Tem President U Myint Swe, the meeting was attended by Pro Tem President (Duty) Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Speaker of Pyithu Hluttaw U T Khun Myat, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) Vice-Senior General Soe Win, Union Minister for Defence Admiral Tin Aung San, Union Minister for Home Affairs Lt-Gen Yar Pyae, Union Minister for Border Affairs Lt-Gen Tun Tun Naung, special invitees SAC Secretary Lt-Gen Aung Lin Dwe and Joint-Secretary Lt-Gen Ye Win Oo.

In his clarification, the Senior General explained efforts to hold a free and fair multi-party democracy general election by laying down the future road map since taking the responsibility of the state duty. He added that despite the goal to hold the election after two years of declaring the State of Emergency, it failed to fulfill the target due to the terrorist acts.

The Senior General highlighted the implementations to achieve peace and stability in the state, economic development, turning out human resources needed for boosting production, education promotion, better health care services, agriculture and livestock progress, and plans to carry out the Nationwide Population and Household Census while striving to build a union based on democracy and federal system. He called for the extension of next 6 months emergency declaration, stressing the need to continue efforts in addressing the challenges the country is facing.

The attendees discussed the recommendation on the extension of next 6 months emergency declaration. Following discussions, the meeting decided that the State of Emergency is extended for an additional six months, with the unanimous decision by the members of the National Defence and Security Council.
