Natural gas pipelines supplying gas-fired power plants in Yangon have been targeted by terrorist attacks, causing significant disruptions to electricity generation.

On November 23rd, an explosion occurred near Nyaung Chaung Village in Thahton Township, Mon State, damaging the pipeline and forcing the shutdown of the Hlawgar Power Plant. This resulted in a loss of 55 megawatts of electricity and a subsequent decrease in power supply to Yangon Region, Mon, and Kayin State.

The terrorists used mines to destroy the gas pipeline. Security forces are actively implementing necessary measures in the affected areas, while the Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE) staff are working diligently to repair the damaged infrastructure.

This incident follows a similar attack on November 16th, where the gas pipeline distribution to Thahton Gas Turbine, via the Myaing Kalay Natural Gas Distribution Station, was exploded near 10-mile Village in Pa-an, Kayin State.

The attack led to reduced electricity supply in Yangon Region, Mawlamyine, and Thahton Townships. However, MOGE successfully conducted repair works, and operations were restored to normalcy by November 18th. The recurrent attacks on non-military infrastructure have resulted in significant socio-economic losses for the public.

Security measures are being intensified, with cooperation from the local population, to combat terrorists and ensure regional stability.
