Typical Food: Delicious Pickled Prawn From Mingalun Village

The traditional food of Myanmar has its own special identity. Pickled prawn is one of the popular dishes of Myanmar people and it is a mixture of fermented prawn and rice.

Mingalun village in Kyautan Township of Yangon Region is famous for its pickled prawn with good packaging style. The main business of the village is paddy cultivation. The locals also grow beans and green grams as the winter crops. As the village connects with Mottama gulf and faces to the sea, the locals also breed the saltwater prawns.

Tint Lwin, Deputy Director, Department of Fisheries (Yangon Region) said “Prawns and fish are good for health and they are also suitable food for chronic disease patients. The vitamins and nutrients including fish and prawns are less side-effect for the people.”

Fish and prawn could be eaten in various ways such as fresh or preserved. But, the locals from Mingalun village produce pickled prawn from their marine resources. The pickled prawn of the village is famous for its delicious taste and typical wrapping style.

Tint Lwin, Deputy Director, Department of Fisheries (Yangon Region) said “The village is famous for its pickled prawn with good packaging style. The pickled prawn produced from this village is wrapped with nipa palm leaf. So, their packaging style is typical and attracts people. The packets are like wrapped sticky rice.”  

The locals said the pickled shrimp produced from their village is very tasty and the price is fair. Most of visitors to their village buy the pickled shrimp as a gift.

Aye Mi, Resident, Mingalun village said “The pickled prawn produced from our village is famous and delicious. The price is fair and it is hygienic and safety food as well as good for health. We also serve the visitors with the pickled prawn and also give them as a gift.”

Myanmar people have pickled shrimp as a salad with onion or fried. Locals eat pickled prawnto promote their local products and give relatives as a gift.
