An "elephant canteen" designed especially for wild Asian elephants have been established in Pu'er city, southwest China's Yunnan Province since August 2019.
The city initiated the Asian Elephant Food Source Base construction project in order to meet elephants' need for food hunting and reduce human-wildlife conflict.
In Pu'er and Xishuangbanna of Yunnan Province where Asian elephants most frequently occur, local governments construct food source bases for elephants and encourage the farmers to grow crops favored by Asian elephants during different seasons and periods.
This will not only increase farmers' income but also beef up the human-elephant harmony. More than fifty elephants come to seek food in their special canteen at most.
