At least 12 people have died and 27 others were injured after an overloaded truck lost control and ploughed into devotees near the historic Sheetla Mata Temple in central India.

The accident occurred late Saturday night into Sunday.  The truck broke through police barricades while descending a steep slope, crushing roadside shops and devotees gathered for darshan before hitting the temple wall. A total of 39 people were taken to the hospital, including two police personnel. Five to six of the injured remain in critical condition with severe fractures, while others sustained minor injuries.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have expressed condolences, with financial assistance announced for the victims and their families. Authorities are investigating how the truck entered the restricted road despite security arrangements for Navratri.
