School Enrollment: Education Access For Visually Impaired Persons

In order for the people with visual impairment from respective States and Regions to get an education, Kyimyindaing School for the Blind – Yangon is accepting the enrollment for the 2022-2023 academic year starting from May 26th.

Children with visual impairment between the age of 6 and 18 will be accepted at the school which is being operated by the Department of Social Welfare under the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.

Cho Cho Mar, Principal, Kyimyindaing School for the Blind – Yangon said “At our school, we will nurture the blind children between the age of 6 and 18, and let them sleep and eat at the school for free with the fund provided by the government for the 2022-2023 academic years. The admission period will begin from May 26th and the school will open from June 1st. We will only accept people with visual impairment; however, they have to be mentally and physically fit.”

There are altogether 30 teachers at the school. Among them, 9 are visually impaired and 2 are disabled. It is known that the curriculum provided by the Ministry of Education will be taught with Braille.

Cho Cho Mar, Principal, Kyimyindaing School for the Blind – Yangon said “In this academic year, we will teach the children from KG to Grade 5with Braille as a special education. We will use text books provided by the Ministry of Education. Students who finish Primary school will be transferred to the Middle school and High School located in Kyimyindaing Township under the supervision of Ministry of Education. With cooperation of the Department of Social Welfare and Myanmar National Association of the Blind (MNAB), we also train the children with visual impairment to be able to walk using white cane, so that, they can wander around by themselves without assistance.”

It is learnt that the school also teaches vocational education to the children with visual impairment in order for them to become independent and get their own income.
