




The Social Welfare department under the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and resettlement opened 11 schools for Home Science in respective Regions and States to enhance capacity building and to provide more job opportunities for people.
A traditional costume sewing competition organized by the Department of Social Welfare kicked off on May 9th and 21 trainers from those schools for Home Science participated in the competition.
The purpose of this competition is to improve the skills of the trainers from those schools in the respective Regions and States under the Department of Social Welfare.
Lay Lay Myint, Deputy Director, Women Development Division (Nay Pyi Taw) said "By holding this kind of competition, we can encourage them to improve their skills and to work harder. The contest represents 9 States and Regions, and 21 competitors will participate in it. It will last 3 days."
Since it is a traditional dress making competition, it will be marked according to the set rules and regulations and competitors will receive their prizes accordingly.
Lay Lay Myint, Deputy Director, Women Development Division (Nay Pyi Taw) said "There are various rules and marking methods in this competition. The judges will assess how much the stitching is neat, the creativity on the basic design, and the selection of cloth and color and accessories adorned in the traditional dress. Moreover, they will also evaluate the models who will wear the dresses and how they match with the costumes."
The prizes are set 1.5 million kyats for the first prize, 1 million kyats for the second and 500,000 kyats for the third prize. There will also be 18 consolation prizes of 100,000 kyats each. The prizes will be presented to the winners on the upcoming Myanmar Women’s Day Commemoration Ceremony on 3rd July.
Eaint Htet Wai, Assistant Trainer, Women Development Division (Myitkyina) said "I participate in the contest because I want to improve the livelihood of women using my skills. I can also test my skills in the competition. I will make a simple traditional dress using fancy accessories and a scarf decorated with pearls."
It is learnt that a total of 21 competitors are competing in the contest that will take place from 9th to 11th May.
