World Meteorological Day: A Commemoration Ceremony Held in Myanmar

A commemoration ceremony on ‘62nd anniversaries of World Meteorological Day (WMO)’ was held in Nay Pyi Taw on 23rd March.

Union Minister for Transport and Communications Admiral Tin Aung San delivered the opening address, saying that due to climate change, the weather, extremes of hydrological and climatic events are becoming more prevalent around the world, especially in the archipelago, and developing countries are the most affected by climate change.

Myanmar is also suffering from the effects of climate change. He pointed out that the current cyclone was the first to hit Myanmar in March during 100 years period due to the current changing climate system. It was followed by the video message of Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization. The Union Minister later awarded the first, second and third prizes to the winners of the article contest commemoration the WMO Day.

They later viewed the exhibition of modernized observation for instruments and record photos of the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology’s activities.

A research paper reading session was also held to mark the WMO Day. The World Meteorological Organization was established in 1951. World Meteorological Day has been celebrated since 1961. The memorial ceremony of the Day has been celebrated annually every year on 23 March. The theme of this year 2022 is ‘Early Warning and Early Action. Hydrometeorological and Climate Information for Disaster Risk Reduction’.
