


Plans are underway to resume the operation of No.2 Steel Mill in PangPet of southern Shan State which has been suspended in January 2017.
The project was developed by Russian Tyazhpromexport (TPE) Company and the Myanmar Economic Corporation on 5 September 2006. The project was transferred to the Ministry of Industry on 1 October 2012. Over 98% of the project has been completed when it was suspended operation over four years ago.
Factory Manager, No.2 Steel Mill (Pangpet), Ministry of Industry, Min Thu said “Since the project is huge, we are carrying out the works through four phases. We have already completed three phases, and only left to implement the last phase. 98% of the project has completed. Before implementing the remaining 2% of construction works, we have to make inspection for the operation of mechanical and electrical equipment since it was suspended for over four years.”
For resuming the operation, training will be conducted to the staff with the technological assistance of Russian Government.
Factory Manager, No.2 Steel Mill (Pangpet), Ministry of Industry, Min Thu said “There are 22 workshops included in the mill. So, it will take about one and a half year to complete the project. 145 experts from Russia will work together with us for 6 months. Moreover, 18 trainers will also conduct training to our staff for six months. All the cost for the training will be provided by the Russian Government.”
Built on over 5,100 acres land area, the PangPet project is the very first iron and steel project implemented in Myanmar, and when completed, it will provide the local demand without importing.
