2024 Nationwide Census: Preparation Process To Begin On October 1

Population Department under the Ministry of Immigration and Population is scheduled to collect Nationwide Population and Housing Census in 2024.

Myanmar has collected nationwide census in 1973 and 1983 respectively. Due to various circumstances, the census collecting was implemented in 2014 after more than 30 years period.

Based on the previous experience, arrangements will be made starting 1st October this year through four work processes.

Director, Population Department, Khine Khine Soe said “We plan to commence the preparation process on October 1st as the first step. It will be carried out for more than 50 months before collecting the Census in 2024. The second step is collecting census data, and we plan to carry out this process during March and April in 2024. The next step is compiling the statistics. We will compile the statistics we have gathered the data collecting process. It is scheduled to be implemented starting May 2024. The next step is making assessment and issuing reports.”

For the preparation process, there are 8 steps which include compiling basis data, drafting master plan for census collecting, formation of census commission and committees at respective levels, drawing GIS Map and planning the collecting plots, purchasing necessary equipment to be readied for Computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI) system, test data collecting, appointing data collectors and conducting training, as well as the public educative campaigns.

Director, Population Department, Khine Khine Soe said “Among these steps, five steps can be carried out instantly at the head office. These steps include compiling basis data which is collecting the population and housing data as well as the names of respective regions, states, districts, wards and villages. The next step is drafting detailed project plan including the list of equipment to be purchased and time frame. Another steps are the formation of  census commission and committees at respective levels, drawing GIS Map and planning the collecting plots and compiling sample questions.”

Detailed plan will be drafted for collecting census data at 110,000 collection plots with the participation of about 42,000 staff.

It is learnt that the whole process has to be carried out for over four years.
