New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern warned on Tuesday a "big clean-up job lies ahead" after heavy rain caused extensive flooding in parts of the country. The adverse weather has flooded roads, homes and fields and also forced the closure of a major bridge in the town of Ashburton. Footage showed wrecked areas of road as inspectors worked to examine the extent of the damage to the bridge. Ardern described the flooding as a "one in 100 year" event and stressed the main priority was to restore transport links to the Ashburton area after other routes were also affected by flood waters. "On Monday several hundred people in New Zealand were evacuated from their homes and some were rescued by helicopter as heavy rain caused widespread flooding.
