World Standards Day: Theme: “Video Standards Create A Global Stage”

Myanmar celebrated the World Standards Day 2019 in Yangon on Wednesday with the theme: “Video standards create a global stage”.

World standards day has been held worldwide since 1970 and Myanmar has celebrated the day since 2012.

It was celebrated not only to raise awareness on the importance of standards in the global economic community and upgrading business, industry, public sectors but also to pay honour to the collaborative efforts of the thousands of experts worldwide who develop the voluntary technical agreements that are published as international standards.

According to the Ministry of education, under the guidance of the National Standards Council, 24 technical committees have been formed for the development and adoption of Myanmar standards. Currently, there are about 175 Myanmar standards that have been set and more are under the discussions.

Director General, Department of Research and Innovation, Win Khaing Moe said “Currently, there are about 175 Myanmar standards that we have set and about 200 standards are still under discussion. We prioritized the standards that can facilitate trade, promote product quality, ensure public health and safety and able to protect the environment. We are also working closely with private sectors, stakeholders, departments, as well as international organizations and partners. We also invited members of parliament to today’s celebration in order to improve their knowledge and understanding on Myanmar standards.”

Industry players welcome the celebration and highlighted the needs of standardization in Myanmar.

Vice President, UMFCCI, Dr. Myo Thet said “Both quantity and quality in standardization process are much important for economic development. We still need a lot of efforts and we are currently lack behind than the other countries in standardization. Here in Myanmar, most of the industries are facing difficulties in quality development to compete in global market, and still challenge to produce value added products.”

Experts made presentations on good standardization practice, ASEAN guideline, current status of preparation, adoption and application of Myanmar standards, use of standards in technical regulation as well as ways to protect consumer with standardization in Myanmar and its benefits along with a day celebration.
