The head of the World Health Organization announced that the number of new coronavirus cases reported globally has dropped for the past seven weeks, the longest such period of decline since the pandemic began.

Director-General (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said "Globally, the number of new cases of COVID-19 reported to WHO has now declined for seven weeks in a row, which is the longest sequence of weekly declines during the pandemic so far. While weekly cases are at their lowest since February, deaths are not falling as quickly. "And I welcome the announcement that G-7 countries will donate 870 million vaccine doses, primarily through COVAX. This is a big help but we need more and we need them faster. More than ten thousand people are dying every day.

He called for political leaders to commit to immunizing at least 70% of the world's population by the time of next year's G-7 meeting.
